Scouts Canada – 68th Scout Group Necker Patch
Practice: Illustration and embroidery design
Materials: Embroidered patch
Process: Illustrated badge artwork developed within a fixed nine-colour thread limit. Forms simplified and tested for stitch clarity at small scale, with line weight and negative space adjusted to ensure legibility once embroidered and worn.
Edition: Run of 300
Designed for my Scout group in Canada, this badge represents the four stages of the Scouting movement through a shift from character to symbol. Beavers and Cubs are shown through illustrated animals, while Scouts and Ventures move toward abstraction, reflecting increasing independence. Camping tents mark the transition to self-led exploration, with mountains representing the Venture stage and life beyond the group. As a formal uniform element, the badge needed to read clearly at a distance while holding up through repeated use.
